20 Habits That Stress the Brain -- and Fuel Complex-PTSD & Stress Hormone Addiction

High-Alert Mode, Complex-PTSD, & Stress Hormone Addiction, OH MY!

(Scroll down to watch the video)

Stress is unavoidable, but when it reaches extreme levels, it can have severe consequences on our mental and physical health and all aspects of our life.

Intense and overwhelming stress has been linked to various chronic conditions, including burnout syndrome, Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), and stress hormone addiction, which is the premise of the term “adrenaline junkie.”

For optimal wellness, it’s essential to be aware of everyday habits that can cause and perpetuate unhealthy stress so we can mitigate it and create the right environment for us to thrive versus survive.

This week’s video discusses 20 habits that stress the brain, keep it stuck in high-alert mode, and fuel C-PTSD and stress hormone addiction.

To do this, we first examine C-PTSD and how it unfolds.

As a preview, C-PTSD is a condition caused by repeated exposure to traumatic events or relationships over a long period.

Symptoms can include emotional dysregulation, avoidance behaviors, flashbacks or intrusive thoughts, depression and anxiety, and various chronic physical health issues.

Next, we discuss how stress hormone addiction develops.

When people experience prolonged periods of high-level stress, their bodies become accustomed to elevated stress hormones and the physiological and psychological states they create.

In other words…

When one lives in a state of chaos, survival, and reactivity for so long, it’s hard to learn to live without it.

It becomes a zone of familiarity.

It feels good and right in the short term, even though it perpetuates dysfunction and suffering in the long term.

Because of this, the body-mind system continually yearns for this state and seeks ways to sustain it.

Finally, we discuss some everyday habits that perpetuate the vicious stress-pain-illness-life dysfunction cycle and create neural programming that keeps people stuck in ruts.

The longer these ruts go on, the harder it is to break out of them.

Understanding these habits can help us identify personal behaviors that contribute to our challenges and allow us to take steps towards better managing our lives.

If you’re seeking ways to optimize brain and nervous system health and wire yourself for wellness and success, or better help your clients do so, this video is a great resource.
