Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is one of the most polarizing tools in the wellness space. Some practitioners swear by it, while others dismiss it completely.
The truth? Much of the criticism comes from misunderstanding what HTMA is actually designed to show.
In our newest YouTube video, we break down some of the biggest misconceptions surrounding HTMA and why so many people may be looking at it through the wrong lens.
Many of the arguments against HTMA sound convincing on the surface:
Hair calcium doesn’t match blood calcium
Results can vary between labs
Supplements don’t always change patterns quickly
There isn’t enough mainstream discussion around it
These concerns deserve to be addressed. But they often assume HTMA is supposed to function like a standard blood chemistry panel—which is where the confusion begins.
What if HTMA isn’t meant to tell you what a blood test tells you?
What if it offers a completely different type of insight?
When used properly, HTMA can help reveal patterns related to stress physiology, mineral handling, adaptation, and how the body has been responding over time.
That’s a very different conversation than simply asking whether calcium is “high” or “low.”
One of the biggest mistakes people make is reducing calcium to bones and blood levels.
Calcium also plays important roles in:
Nervous system signaling
Muscle contraction and tension
Energy production
Stress response pathways
Thyroid and metabolic regulation
Which means discussions around hair calcium may need more nuance than most people realize.
We don’t teach HTMA as a simple deficiency test or a quick supplement roadmap.
We view it as a broader tool, one that can help practitioners understand patterns, ask better questions, and support deeper healing work.
That shift in perspective changes everything.
In the full video, we unpack the biggest misconceptions around HTMA, explain why it gets dismissed, and share how we approach this tool very differently than most practitioners.
